    1. I was there as well, since I always kept my ticket stubs, I still have that one although didn't recall the back up band or if I even saw them! AN all-time great show, was on the floor about 60 rows back but kept moving up as front seats emptied to font of stage, ended up about row 20 or so. Incredible performance, Magic D was a show stopper. I put that show in my top 15 performances out of 200+ concerts. Saw them again in 82, great, but hard to beat 1980 PCC show! Matt Baulier

  5. Can anyone confirm that J. Geils Band opened for Black Sabbath at the St. Louis Arena Annex on March 21, 1971? I seem to remember finding information online that they filled in for Sweathog who cancelled without much notice, but I can't find that info anymore. I've also seen info that said John Mayall was on that bill, as well. Thanks.

    1. I can't comment on that particular show, but I saw J. Geils Band open for Ten Years After at Kiel Auditorium in St. Louis on 08/28/71. J. Geils brought the house down! They were so well received that they did 3 or 4 encores, resulting in Ten Years After coming on late. Alvin Lee seemed perturbed by J. Geils' reception and cut his show drastically short, which caused was a near riot. I'll never forget that night. I had just turned 18. I saw many great shows at Kiel and the Arena Annex. Black Sabbath and Queen at the Annex were both outstanding. RIP J. Geils. You Rocked!

    2. I was there. What caused the riot was the crowd standing up and dancing to "I'm Goin' Home." I remember running out of there and meeting police once outside. I had hitchhiked to St. Louis from Madison, Wisconsin. When I got to St. Louis on that Saturday afternoon I met some Hare Krishna's and asked them what was going on in town, and they told me Ten Years After was playing that night. Anyway, to make a long story short, I ended up in the hospital in Highland, Illinois later that night while hitchhiking.

    3. I went back to St. Louis to see the Bee Gees a month or so later with a nurse I had met at the hospital in Highland. The British band Tin Tin opened doing their hit "Toast and Marmalad."

  6. "02/19/72 – Fairleigh Dickinson University, Madison, NJ - w/ America (The band America didn't show because of a snowstorm that night) (*)"
America did show at this date, but the sound system along with the dreadful slap back echo in the hall and some nasty aggravation made them give up after several numbers. They then headed back through that snowstorm to New York!

    1. America was there that night, but no one wanted to applaud after they did their numbers(a few polite claps here and there). As soon as J. Giles Band got to the stage, everyone was on their feet, going wild. Despite the late start, J. Giles owned the place for the rest of the evening. Very memorable night.

    2. I was there as well and sat literally on the floor right in front of the band. Terrific show in spite of America blowing it off. I don't remember America being there at all? The snow was outrageous and the band better !!! Also saw them at NY Academy of Music

  8. Huge J. Geils Band fan - I just stumbled on an old ticket stub. Torn, so you can't see the whole date, but it reads 'ary 16th', and 'H School Auditorium'. Based on my memory, that would have been Staples HS, in Westport, CT, and the year would have been 72 or 73 (possibly 71). At some point, I'd written 1972 on the back, but I have not idea if that's accurate or now.

  15. I went to see J Geils play at Franklin Pierce college in Rindge NH (double bill with Butterfield Blues Band) the summer of what I thought was 1970 but I don't see it listed here. Does anyone know when they actually played there? I'd really love to know just to get my memories straight.

    1. I was at that Concert too, a school mate of ours was having a bad day, so we had to leave. We did see The J.Geils band, and it was a once in a lifetime performance. I had never see a better show. I have been trying to find the exact date. It was the 1970-1971 school year for sure, and it was in September as I recall.

    2. I'm trying to find that out too. I started searching under the Paul Buttefield Blues bad. I know it was the 1970-1971 school year, in the fall sept/oct

  16. Cheers Billydee. I've updated that tour date entry. I've had to split the tour date pages into two because blogger won't let me update this page. I think I've reached some sort of word limit. You can find 1978 - 1983 here: http://thejgeilsband.blogspot.co.uk/p/blog-page_23.html

  22. I didn't know of the J. Geils Band until I seen them open for Ten Years After in St. Louis. But man was I impressed. And the drummer - wow! I remember he was wearing gym shorts. And that I got to see that same show three months later back home in Wisconsin was incredible.
